Repairing a damaged roof is probably the most dangerous task of home renovation and maintenance. Falls can prove fatal, even from low heights, and injuries are common. The biggest causes of roof leaks are defective flashings and poor installations, which is why it is important to make sure any work done on your roof is done properly. Flashings could be the chimney, apron, stop, or the valley where two roofs meet. If roof leaks are not fixed, dampness can rot the frame of the house and cause serious structural damage.

Some Important Tips

Checking your roof regularly for any damage or potential leaks is very important. A good time to do this is at the end of spring, as this means any problems can be fixed before the bad winter weather of snow build up and ice. Repairs are most easily detected in spring, but you should also check your house and roof after any major storm to ensure there is no structural damage.

Before beginning any roof repair, make sure the roof is clean and free of any rubbish and debris. Don’t use a high pressure washer, as this can cause further damage to your roof, especially if it is a shingle roof. If you suspect there is damage to your roof, it is better to call a professional roofing expert rather than trying to look yourself. This is safer and will result in better quality repairs.

Although doing any repair work on your roof yourself may save you money, in the long run it is not always better. Hiring a professional will result in higher quality work that will probably last much longer, and it is also much safer. Flat roof repair is especially dangerous as any fractures in singles allow water to get underneath and potentially damage the structure of the entire house.

How To Select A Roofer For Roof Repair

Selecting a good roofing expert is very important, as there are many fraudulent workmen who simply pretend to be qualified professionals but are only interested in money. The work they do tends to be of poor quality, if they finish the work at all. You need to make sure the person you hire has a good reputation and has the proper certification and training. Check their references and documentation, and compare prices with other roofing firms. But don’t hire someone just because they are the cheapest as price is not the only thing to think about. Because roof repair can be expensive, you want to make sure you are getting good value and quality workmanship for your money. Once you decide on a roofer, get everything in writing and make sure you read and understand the contract before you sign it.

Repairing the roof of a mobile home can be a challenging task, even if the repairs needed are relatively minor. The work needed is different from that needed to fix a regular metal or slate roof, although it is easier to determine whether or not your roof needs fixing. You can tell if repairs are needed by checking the silver coating for cracks and a thinning appearance, and looking for gaps in the seams where the metal folds.

Starting Mobile Home Roof Repair

You’ll need to gather a few tools before you can begin your repairs, such as pushings, rolling, spatula, paint tray, thinner, fipe fill, sealer and roof coating. There are a few different coatings available for you to choose from, including silver coating, rubber coating, and elastomeric coating.

To begin with, use a ladder to limb up onto the roof of your mobile home. Make sure you step on the beams rather than in the space in between; the beams are stronger and better able to support your weight. Before you step anywhere, press down on the spot with your hand and try to feel the solid beam underneath. These are the places you want to step.

First, check for gaps around the pipes. These can be the source of any leaks, and if the gap is more than an inch wide, you’ll need to fill it in using glass fipe. Cover it with black sealant, and then apply a coat of whichever roof coating you have. If you’re using elastomeric coating, the repairs will last a long time: five to ten years. Start at one end of the roof and work your way to the other side, filling in gaps as you go.

To reduce the frequency of repairs and give your roof a longer life, you can cover the insulation sheets with rubber. The rubber will not only seal the entire roof in one go, but it will also improve your mobile home’s insulation. If you want to do this, it is recommended that you hire a professional, as the process can be lengthy and complicated.

Safety Tips While Doing Mobile Home Roof Repairs

If you are performing your repairs during the summer, try to work in the morning or evening so that you can avoid the hottest part of the day. Make sure you get someone to help you hold the ladder, or hand you tools that you cannot reach yourself. This will help avoid any accidental falls from the roof, which could cause you serious harm. Be very careful when cutting metal sheets as the edges are very sharp and can give you nasty gashes. Follow all coating instructions carefully, and safely dispose of any remaining coating when you have finished.

Many different metals can be used to make roofs, such as stainless steel, steel, copper, aluminium, and zinc allots. Every material has its own benefits and drawbacks, and has properties that impact on its strength and appearance.

Steel is the most common metal roofing material because it is stronger than metals like aluminium. Coatings can be applied t protect against corrosion and rust. For example, zinc is used to provide sealing and protect against corrosion. Stainless steel is resilient, but expensive. Aluminium is often used in residential housing because it is lightweight and doesn’t rust. However, it needs some kind of coating or paint to make it look attractive. Ike aluminium, cooper does not rust, but it is again quite expensive.

Metal Roof Repair

Although metal roofs are fairly tough, but they do still need to be maintained. Generally, you should remove any loose nails, seal any leaks, and attend to signs of deterioration to prevent future damage.

Common problems with metal roofs include rust, flashings, and seam leaks. Corrosion and rusting is caused by the galvanization of the roof wearing out and revealing the bare metal below. Leaks in metal roofs are often caused by poor flashing design and construction.

To repair a metal roof, you will need the following equipment: roofing cement, pliers, wire pushes, all-purpose cleaners, sandpapers, tin snips, solder and soldering guns/irons.

To begin with, determine what kind of metal your roof is made of, and acquire a piece of the same metal to make a patch. You’ll need to clean the damaged area and then let it dry. Remove any debris that has accumulated. Cut your patch out to be at least 2 or 3 centimetres bigger than the damaged area. Use tin snips to cut the corners. Fold the edges carefully and use sandpaper on them until the folds are shinier than the remainder of the patch. Put the patch on the area being repaired and weigh it down with something heavy like a cinder block.

For the repair to be effective, use a soldering iron to solder the entire patch. Check that there are no gaps, and then cover the area being repaired with roofing cement. Place the patch over the area and apply one more coating of cement.

Mobile home roof repair is quick and inexpensive. Roof coating can be sued to repair small leaks, but for bigger holes and rust spots, you can use a patch of the same material to repair it. If there are numerous holes, it may be easier to simply replace the entire roof.

It is important that you watch out for any damage in your roof, as any defects can endanger the entire house and weaken the structure. There are many leak repair products available that can protect your roof from even the harshest weather. Remember that your roof is meant to protect your home from bad weather, not make it worse.

Depending on the type of roof you have, the technique needed to repair a leaf will be different. Each style of roof (gable, cross gabled, mansard, hip, pyramid hip, cross hipped, saltbox, gampel, flat, bonnet, shed) and each material type used (asphalt shingles, sheet metals, cement tiles, wood shakes or shingles, slate, rubber roofing) will need to be approached differently during repairs.

Looking for Damage

You can tell if you have a leaky roof by checking for things like mould, ceiling water, water stains, damp smells, peeling wallpaper, or wet spots on the ceiling or walls. It can be difficult to pinpoint the exact spot of a leak, as water can travel quite a long way from its origin. Prevention is always better than fixing an existing leak, and so it is important that you regularly inspect your roof in order to detect problems before they worsen.

Some Useful Tips

Before you start to work on your roof, there are some important safety tips you need to remember. Don’t go up on the roof if it has been raining; a wet roof can be slippery and very dangerous. Use a sturdy ladder and safety ropes when climbing, and wear rubber-soled shoes for better grip. Check for missing, misshapen or fractured slakes or shingles for some indication for where any leaks could be. Clean the area well and remove and debris that is lying around.

Spring is the best season for roof leak repair as you can fix any damage to the roof in time for the harsh weather of winter and the damage it can do to your roof and house. You also avoid the ice and snow that builds up on the roof, making any repairs difficult.

Roof Leak Repair

When repairing a leaky roof, there are a few things that are good to remember. Most roof leaks are caused by defective or damaged flashings, or poor installation. Use a secure ladder to climb up onto the roof, and never climb on wet roof. It’s a good idea to have some help when repairing a roof, as this will increase safety and efficiency. Try not to work during the day, especially when it is very hot during the summer. If you need to clean the area where you’re working of rubbish and debris, avoid using a pressure washer as this can damage the roof even more. Make sure the gutter is clear to avoid a build up of rainwater.

DIY kits are available at most hardware stores, and these are appropriate for minor repairs. If there is major damage to your roof, it is better to hire a professional, trained roofing expert to do the job for you.

Flat roofs are made of layers of tar and roofing felt. Roofs can begin to leak when if this felt becomes damaged. Leaks are usually easy to locate as the leak is directly under the damaged spot. However, if the water enters one spot and travels, it may emerge some distance from the damaged spot, making it hard to find.

How To Test For The Leaks

The first thing to do when testing for leaks is to go up on to the roof and look for any cracks or holes, especially around the seams and flashing of the roof. Also look around the nails, as water can sometimes seep in through exposed nail heads. Any discoloration will suggest stagnant water and possible cracks or holes.

Next, you need to take a hose up on to the rood and run it slowly at the drain points. Be patient; this process takes time as you need to do this for the entire roof. Once you locate the leak, you can begin to repair it.

How To Start Flat Roof Repair

Before you start work, clean up any pooled water around the leak and allow the surface to dry. Also remove any debris or gravel, which will allow you to look for any cracks or large bubbles.

You’ll need some equipment to repair a flat roof leak: a utility knife, clean rags, safety goggles, propane torch, trowel, hammer, 6D galvanized roofing nails, and asphalt roof cement.

If there are bubbles on the roof, use a sharp knife to slice them open along the middle. Be careful not to cut the roofing felt underneath. Lift the bubble from the cut edges, and squeeze out any water inside by pressing towards the middle. Use rags to absorb up any water, and prop up the edges of the bubble so that the layers underneath can dry. Lay a thick layer of the asphalt roof cement on the bottom edges and press down hard on the sides. To close the bubble permanently, nail down both sides of the slit. Cover the entire bubble with cement and ensure the nail heads are properly covered.

Hiring A Professional For Flat Roof Repair

Repairing a flat roof can be difficult, so many homeowners hire a roofing professional to do the job for them. There are many roofing experts listed in the yellow pages, but, make sure you do some research on them before you hire. Check that they have the proper training and qualifications, and that they aren’t overcharging. Also make you sure you hire someone who specializes in working with the type of material your flat roof is made of. The different materials roofs can be made of (wood, tile, asphalt, slate etc) all require different techniques for repair, so you need to make sure your workman knows how to work with the material you have. Metal roof repair especially will be different from repairing the other materials listed. And finally, always read the fine print and make sure you understand the terms and conditions of the contract!

Slate has long been used as a roofing material because of its durability, resistance to hail, and ability to resist fire. Slate is commonly used in buildings such as churches, country clubs, and custom designed homes. Slate comes in many different colours, grades, sizes and weights. Slate does need to be repaired regularly, even though it has a long life. Check for any cracks or brittleness. For a particular roof type like slate, you may need a professional who is experienced in repairing slate roofs if you find you have a leak.

Slates roofs require particular techniques and a great amount of care to repair due to the way they are constructed. Individual pieces of slate are joined together by nails. If the nail is hammered in too tightly, the slate will become pinched, or cracks can appear. There is no room for error when installing or fixing slate roofs. Other things that can impact on the condition of a slate roof are roof slope, condensation in the interior of the house, mineral deposits, moss, roof framing, and the quality of the installation.

Nearly all slate roofs have some kind of defect, whether it be slate damage, poor flashing installation, or some other mechanical defect. These can cause leaks, especially during heavy rain periods, windy rainfalls, or rain build up due to ice blocks in winter.

Assessing the Roof

If you think your slate roof needs fixing, obtain the services of a professional roof expert for a consultation. This is an important part of slate roof repair, so don’t rush it. Once the problem is fully understood, the roofer can tell you exactly what is wrong, how to fix it, and how much it will cost. Because slate roofs have a long life, it is better to repair them than replace them. Because slate roofs are relatively expensive, it’s better to have a professional do the repairs rather than doing it yourself.

Starting Slate Roof Repair

If you do decide to perform the repairs yourself, you’ll need some equipment: extension ladder, safety goggles, work gloves, hammer, replacement slate, nail ripper, nail set, slate hook and scrap piece of lumber. Remember that slate is very slippery when wet, so be very careful when up on the roof.

To begin with, every broken or misshapen slate needs to be replaced. Make sure you are wearing work gloves, then use the nail rippers to prise the nails out of the slates. Then you can remove the slate and put a new one in the gap. Cut the new slate so that it fits, then place it in gently, lowering it into the space with the slate hook. Use a temporary wedge to stop other slates being broken. This process can then be repeated for all the other slates that need replacing.
