Repairing the roof of a mobile home can be a challenging task, even if the repairs needed are relatively minor. The work needed is different from that needed to fix a regular metal or slate roof, although it is easier to determine whether or not your roof needs fixing. You can tell if repairs are needed by checking the silver coating for cracks and a thinning appearance, and looking for gaps in the seams where the metal folds.
Starting Mobile Home Roof Repair
You’ll need to gather a few tools before you can begin your repairs, such as pushings, rolling, spatula, paint tray, thinner, fipe fill, sealer and roof coating. There are a few different coatings available for you to choose from, including silver coating, rubber coating, and elastomeric coating.
To begin with, use a ladder to limb up onto the roof of your mobile home. Make sure you step on the beams rather than in the space in between; the beams are stronger and better able to support your weight. Before you step anywhere, press down on the spot with your hand and try to feel the solid beam underneath. These are the places you want to step.
First, check for gaps around the pipes. These can be the source of any leaks, and if the gap is more than an inch wide, you’ll need to fill it in using glass fipe. Cover it with black sealant, and then apply a coat of whichever roof coating you have. If you’re using elastomeric coating, the repairs will last a long time: five to ten years. Start at one end of the roof and work your way to the other side, filling in gaps as you go.
To reduce the frequency of repairs and give your roof a longer life, you can cover the insulation sheets with rubber. The rubber will not only seal the entire roof in one go, but it will also improve your mobile home’s insulation. If you want to do this, it is recommended that you hire a professional, as the process can be lengthy and complicated.
Safety Tips While Doing Mobile Home Roof Repairs
If you are performing your repairs during the summer, try to work in the morning or evening so that you can avoid the hottest part of the day. Make sure you get someone to help you hold the ladder, or hand you tools that you cannot reach yourself. This will help avoid any accidental falls from the roof, which could cause you serious harm. Be very careful when cutting metal sheets as the edges are very sharp and can give you nasty gashes. Follow all coating instructions carefully, and safely dispose of any remaining coating when you have finished.
